do you remember a pub? do you remember a pub?

kourous, wobbly (bad!!) dancing to Snap’s “Mary had a little boy”, Capt. Morgan dark rum on the breath, insanely salty (perfect!) chips, strange lighting from Dreams 90Sahara city that made clothes look like they had lint or little white flecks on them….

bush baby crying in the trees, shivering slightly in the cold-ish Rift Valley air, fish eagles swooping down to catch fish tossed at them, ridiculously opulent tents, taking the pirogues (canoes!!) to the island camp, perfection that is Lake Baringo…

showering in some steamy shower (TM?) contraption for a max 7 minute shower before it became a cold shower;listening to ridiculously lyrical brogues as we sipped dark stout; figuring out the pound coins (yes coins!!) and listening to ads with the price given as “4 pounds, 35 pence and VAT”; eating the best (THE best!) bacon in the world and realizing that French toast can be eaten with marmalade and/or jam, yet another Co. Wicklow pub with that warm, damp welcoming smell of cigarettes, beer on tap and dark, dark establishments; permanent drinks on the house for “our visitor from America”…

Davis Sq. pubs, drinking (again) on the house, ridiculous flights of fancy on the “T”, shopping for tchotchkes in JP (queen of kitsch!), listening to brilliant, semi-discovered wordsmiths at the House of Blues (falling down the house of blues stair steps!), running for the last red line train hoping to make it to down town crossing before the last blue line train departed, first snowfall ever and realizing how insanely beautifully freshly fallen snow lights up the night, cheering the Kenyans near the Public Library as they won the marathon (never say you doubted)…

Ain’t love grand? Don’t they sometimes brush on great? It’s not a shabby world we live in and every once in a while, it’s — wonderful.
